FEMTO EYE SURGERY

Having good vision is essential for various aspects of our lives, from work to daily activities and overall quality of life. However, many individuals suffer from common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, which can impact their vision. Although glasses or contact lenses are available to correct vision, some individuals find them inconvenient and prefer an alternative solution. Fortunately, medical advancements have made it possible to achieve clear vision without the need for glasses or contacts through minimally invasive surgery, which is increasingly becoming the standard of care in various medical fields, including refractive surgery.

Today, refractive errors can be treated with various different treatments. One of the most prominent of those is the Femto LASIK treatment.

All you Need to Know About Femto Eye Surgery

Femto Lasik is one of the most effective and advanced computer-controlled technologies in refractive surgery. Femto LASIK is a form of LASIK used to correct vision problems including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism by way of deploying a laser on the cornea.

Femtosecond-assisted (Femto) laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a type of laser eye surgery. The method aims at resolving vision problems by reshaping the cornea of the eye. In the early 1990s, the development of the Femto laser enabled surgeons to generate the corneal flap required for LASIK using a laser, eliminating the need for a mechanical cutting tool. Post-surgery, the flap can be repositioned without sutures, resulting in faster healing.

During the course of the procedure, as an initial step, numbing drops are placed into the patient’s eye, and the eyelids are kept open with the help of a machine called an eye speculum. A suction ring is then centered over the pupil and suction is applied. To steady the globe of the eye and flatten the cornea, a lens made of glass is used. Following this, the surgeon directs the laser to the surgical site and proceeds with the initial treatment. A flap is created on the cornea’s surface using laser pulses, and the suction is subsequently released. The created flap is then lifted to expose the cornea to an excimer laser that employs ultraviolet rays to reshape it accurately in accordance with your condition. The flap is replaced once reshaping is complete and heals in place without needing any sutures.

Who is Eligible to Receive Femto Eye Surgery?

To be eligible to receive the Femto LASIK Eye Surgery one must meet the following terms:

  • The individual should be over 18 years of age.
  • The individual should have a stable vision.
  • The individual shouldn’t have any complications that would not allow for proper healing.
  • Individuals with thinner corneas possess a greater risk of blindness after the procedure.
  • Individuals who’ve previously had refractory surgeries are not recommended to go through with the Femto LASIK surgery.

How Does Femto LASIK Work?

There are various vision-related problems like myopia (also known as nearsightedness), Hypermetropia (also known as farsightedness), Astigmatism (a condition where the eye is unable to visualize horizontal and vertical lines properly), and Presbyopia (a condition that requires the use of bifocal lenses to be treated).

Refractive surgery is not a universal solution for eye problems as it can only address issues that involve reshaping the cornea. In cases where the cornea needs reshaping, refractive surgery involves creating an incision on the eye’s surface and utilizing a laser to reshape the cornea.

As a first step in the procedure, numbing drops are administered to the patient’s eye, and an eye speculum is used to keep the eyelids open. A suction ring is then positioned over the pupil and activated to steady the eye and flatten the cornea with the assistance of a glass lens. The surgeon then directs a laser to the area that needs treatment and creates a flap on the surface of the cornea using laser pulses. Once the suction is released, the flap is lifted, exposing the cornea to an ultraviolet excimer laser that accurately reshapes it according to the patient’s condition. After the reshaping is complete, the flap is put back in place, and it heals without requiring any sutures.
