LASIK SURGERY
Optical aberrations inherent in the eye adversely affect the visual acuity and the optical performance of the eye. With wave front guided Lasik it is now possible to reduce these aberrations, and the initial results reported are extremely encouraging. This procedure may also enhance our vision much above normal levels and will certainly make us refine our definition of normal vision.
A giant leap in Laser refractive surgery now aims at trying to improve upon patient’s vision both quantitatively and qualitatively. A new instrument called the Aberrometer has been developed which would map the imperfections (aberrations) of the eye. These aberrations would now be removed using the Laser. Thus “Zyoptix” or Aberrometer linked ablation would integrate the data obtained using the Aberrometer for a particular eye and the Laser would work accordingly. This would offer personalized and customized vision solution for the patient. Zyoptix thus holds the potential to deliver the “Eagle Eye Vision” to mankind.
Lasik or Laser in situ Keratomileusis reshapes the cornea by using a Laser beam, thereby altering its curvature. It corrects vision by altering refractive power of the eye by calculated change in the curvature of the cornea. The image of the outside world in now focused sharply on the retina.
The procedure is relatively simple and comfortable. Eyes of the patient are made numb by instilling anesthetic eye drops. Using an instrument called microkeratome a thin flap of corneal tissue is raised. Excimer Laser then reshapes the cornea by removing a predetermined precise amount of tissue from inner cornea; the corneal flap is then repositioned back where it bonds without the need of stitches.
How it works?
To treat myopia (nearsightedness) the cornea must be made flatter to reduce converging power of the eye. This is achieved by removing more tissue from the center than around.
To treat hypermetropia (farsightedness) the central cornea must be made steeper thereby enhancing the converging power of the eye. This is achieved by removing more tissue from the periphery than the center.
To treat astigmatism, the cornea must be made more spherical (uniformly curved). By changing the pattern of the beam tissue is removed in one direction more than the other.
The advantages over conventional Lasik?
Better vision (can even be better than normal!) Better results: 14% patients achieve visual acuity of 6/3 and more than 50% patients have visual acuity increased by one line.
Better night vision
Greater predictability
Safer
Decreased complications like glare, colored halos, diminished contrast sensitivity, poor scotopic vision, central islands, bumps, etc.
Less invasive in the sense that lesser amount of tissue ablation required to achieve given effect.
Useful in post Lasik patients to deal with complications, post Keratoplasty patients to deal with complex astigmatism, and may even be useful in apparently normal individuals whose professions demand a very sharp vision.
